Waking Watch Security Services
After the tragic events of 2017 that happened at Grenfell Tower, recommendations were set out by the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) for personnel to patrol at high rise buildings. This precaution, known as the 'Waking Watch' service, for prevention and detection of fire is to ensure that if a fire breaks out occupants can be evacuated in due time. Figures from the National Audit Office (NAO) show that there are 307 tower blocks with unsafe cladding exterior cladding. Only on around half of these buildings has there been work undertaken to replace the potentially dangerous cladding.
Our Waking Watch security services will deploy suitably trained staff for continuous patrols on all floors and also the perimeter of high rise buildings for early detection of a fire. If this were to occur they can quickly raise the alarm and proceed to evacuate occupants.
Their main duties will be to:
- Contact fire services when a fire is detected.
- Check for signs of a fire in and around buildings.
- Detect potential fire risks on or within the façade of a building.
- Ensure every resident is alerted and begins simultaneously evacuating.
- Being on hand for liaising with fire and rescue services when required.
Systems & Control Operations
We set up fully operational welfare/command centres and can send reactive based reporting on any changes or a new hazard that arises during waking watch patrols. Staff will have access to fire alarm systems within their welfare/command centre, giving notice of any fires. The team is equipped with appropriate PPE, a loud hailer and torches.
We follow NFCC Guidance, providing additional temporary fire safety to residents in tower blocks and high-rise developments. We work together with building owners, managers and stakeholders to design and implement an effective Waking Watch system.
